Ants, Wasps & Bees
Ants, wasps and bees belong to the Hymenoptera order of insects. Those that are social live together in a nest community that has a solitary queen, soldiers and workers. These are some of the most highly evolved insects that are thriving longer throughout the year due to milder winters.
Garden Ant (Lasius niger)Garden ants (Lasius niger) are the most common species of ant in the UK although there are several species that can be found, which include the reddish brown and slightly smaller Roger’s ant (Hypoponera punctatissima), along with the yellow-brown Pharaoh’s ant (Monomorium pharaonis), which is smaller still.
Garden ants tend to favor nesting in the soil below walls or underneath paving slabs that receive the most sunlight during the day. They are considered a nuisance by their presence as they forage for sweet or high protein foodstuffs although they carry no risk to public health.

Common wasp (Vespula vulgaris)The two most common wasps found in the UK are the Common wasp (Vespula vulgaris) and the German wasp (Vespula germanica).
They commonly nest in lofts and wall cavities but can also be found in hollow trees and bushes. As decking has become more popular in peoples gardens there has been an increase of ground level wasp’s nests as it provides perfect shelter for them.
Although Honey bees (Apis mellifera) may nest in similar locations to wasps, they will not sting unless provoked as is true with solitary bees. Wasps though will sting readily and repeatedly, which can cause serious danger to the many people who are allergic to their stings. As medium to large nests can be home to as many as 25,000 individuals, don’t let wasps stop you from enjoying your garden in the fair weather, call Guardian pest solutions to remove these pests from your business or homes.
